Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 1 ends with the triumphant revelation that Will Byers has powers. He is able to enter the mind of the hive where he discovers that he can control and kill the Demogorgon. Will is able to save his friends, but he cannot stop Vecna from kidnapping the Hawkins children.
In the Upside Down, Hopper and Eleven discover that Dr. K is not holding Vecna captive, but Kali, aka Eight. Elsewhere, Dustin, Steve, Nancy, and Jonathan have left the safe haven of Hawkins Church to explore an Upside Down version of Hawkins Lab.
Holly Wheeler has briefly escaped from Vecna’s clutches and joined Max. However, Max urges the girl to return to the Creel House as part of a larger plan to escape the “Kamzotz”. (A fan of A Wrinkle in Time, Holly borrowed the name of the book’s prison planet to describe Vecna’s mind.)
